RE: Suprelorin implant question
I've known ferrets live for years with full blown adrenal. My own wee jill had it for about 18 months before passing peacefully in her sleep at the age of 8. Two other jills I know of had no hair for about the same length of time. This was before the suprelorin implant was available. I have only heard good things about it as a treatment for adrenal. The only problem is if the adrenal is caused by a malignant tumour rather than over active adrenal glands. From what I understand the incidence of malignant adrenal cancers implicated in adrenal disease is relatively low.

RE: Suprelorin implant question
I'm sure this is well known and I'll sound simple asking
But I thought the implant for adrenal was to be done if the ferret has it but I have seen peoples comments look as though all ferrets should have it. O.o
I'm worried im endangering my fuzzbutts having not got any of them implanted, is this right or wrong? Xx

RE: Suprelorin implant question
Some people are using it for neutering their ferrets - it can also be used as a possible preventative if your ferret has already been surgically neutered. There is scientific evidence that it MAY help prevent the disease developing, but it's not absolute without more data. It's just up to you and personal choice as to whether you implant or not. There's loads of info about it on my website if you care to read up about it - click on my signature below.

Ok thank you I'll read up when I get on my laptop x
All three of mine have been neutered so feel I'm not doing anything wrong (for now 0.o)

RE: Suprelorin implant question
Ive emailed my vet about this implant, last time I emailed em I asked em will they implant with
the stuff they use for jill jabs LOL (I got mixed up with names, they must of thought I was going looney!)

Anyone know how long this lasts and how long does it take to work. Do the testicles go back up
in the body or something? Just wondering, I sound well thick LOL.
Im just scared that the needle is gonna hurt em.

RE: Suprelorin implant question
My vets will only do it with slight sedation Joe as the needle is a bit bigger then microchip one.
Some vets are happy to do with without thou.

Its suppose to last approx 18 months in ferrets I think.
Its suppose to work like chemical castration so will remove the hormones/smell/aggresion
I think people have had quite good success with it.
More expensive then castration down here thou LOL

Joe as i understand it it wont bring your hob out of season .. but it will prevent him from coming in next season

maybe its best doing it right at the end of this season .. or waiting untill early next year before he comes back in

I have just had a quick search & if anything it will prolong the ferrets season for a while if its implanted while the animals in season

''The initial effect of deslorelin, as a GnRH agonist, is to stimulate the reproductive system: GnRH causes pituitary FSH and LH release that then stimulate follicle growth, estrogen secretion, and ovulation in females, and testosterone and spermatogenesis in males. After that initial stimulation, through negative feedback and desensitization, pituitary and gonadal hormone production are suppressed. Most behavioral and clinical signs are similar to those seen following ovariectomy or castration.''

It should last an average of 18months - but may be less or more - you have to keep your eye on butchness coming back!!! Whole hobs can be implanted at any time to chemically castrate them. Once implanted you get an initial surge where he might get a bit worse and then over 3 weeks his testosterone levels will recede along with the size of his nads!
The hob I've got implanted is just silly soppy at the mo. and no smell.

RE: Suprelorin implant question
i know people appear to be having good success with it.. but have we seen any effects after the implant wears off?

if you have it done as treatment to adrenal do the symptoms just come back so you know its time?

what if you have it after neutering as an andrenal preventative, how do you know when its time to re implant?

Have there been any side effects? Have there been any effects of it being used year after year? is anyone on their 2nd or 3rd implant?

RE: Suprelorin implant question
At what age can they be implanted? I am thinking of getting Bert done to put of surgical off for a year or so to allow him to mature a bit more.

One other thing; if it can be used instead of surgical neutering then by implanting then neutering is there any benefit or is it in effect still 'early castration' if used before he has a first season?

Thanks Big Grin
