Hi ,

First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Martin , im 20 years old and from newcastle upon tyne. I live with my girlfriend and went and bought a ferret to liven the place up, I read up alot about them on the internet first of all and found i needed things like taurine suppliments and so bought all of the required stuff to keep him happy including a silly ammount of toys.

My ferret is an albino male he's just turned 10 weeks old on friday gone. He's nice and healthy (bright eyes and a good coat) my problem is i cannot handle him without him hurting me, Now i understand they like rough play but his bites seem aimed to hurt , these arnt the nibbles he used to give when i first got him but serious bites and once he has you he rolls around, now im aware this is an attacking manner.

I wonder is this just a young kit playing? Or is my ferret turning vicious, i do not want to re-home my ferret so im asking for all the advice possible to gain more in-sight into his attacks. He is a single ferret on his own and im wondering if me handling him for 2 hours or so a day isnt enough for him. I am considering getting a 9 week old kit from the same breeder on monday to try and help calm my ferret down.

Anyone else got any idea's

With a very heavy heart I asked my vet to help Herc on his journey over the bridge today. Herc was a very old ferret. He was a rescue so no way of knowing his exact age, vet guessed his age as 10yrs old and that was 3yrs ago. He has had a few downhill slumps in the last year and a half but this time he just had enough. Vet thinks his kidneys went, they could have run tests and possibly treated it but after discussing it with the vet we decided for Herc's sake it was best to let him go. I will really miss Herc, he was the sweetest, cuddliest boy. He never attempted to nip anyone in the time I knew him.

Update on Bella...

She's settled in well.. with one exception.. she wont eat!! she stashes meat and wanders around while everyone else is up to their necks in raw meat or kibble mush...

So a phone call to the breeder.. what was she eating and in what ammounts?? Perhaps she just doesn't like to dive in with the rest.. but .. while svelt and slim... she could lose weight and get poorly very easily! He said He fed her a mixture of rabbit bits, softened ferret kibble and Whiska's Super Meat cat food! ack i was very dismayed! wet cat food is pretty far down on my desirable foods to feed these lil bellies with legs.. but what about the kibble ?? she isn't touching it... and the rabbit! not a sniff! This morning when i got her out for breakfast she nibbled on a piece of kibble or two but nothing more.. and when i picked her up .. i could feel all the way through her lil belly!!! NOT good... so... Bella, Hubby ( Russell) and i made a trip to our favorite pet store in the little village we live near. Had a lovely wander and show off (everyone knows us and our ferrets and were eager to meet the new darling of the crew) and got some Whiska's Super Meat... Brought Bella Home and gave her a bowl of it in the carrier cage and she Wolfed it down! YAY BELLA... BAD BREEDER!!! i'm thinkin they ate a lot more cat food than He'll admit!! a lil feel of her belly afterwards and yeap.. she was feeling more full ( still not the FULL to BURSTING that my kits get lol ) but progress..

So here's the plan of attack.. and meal times she will come out with the rest of the gang and be offered softened kibble and raw meat just like them... then after she'll go to the carrier to have her cat food slowly mixed with kibble and raw meats to wean her off the garbage...

She's so lovely ... and i'm loving every min with her!

till next time

I have been asked about the dog crate we use at shows and as a holiday cage. Unlike most of the dog crates I have seen it does not have any silly big gaps or bits at corners that a ferret can either get out of or get stuck in. Others have seen it at shows and like it so it's not just me. Well I thought they didn't make them any more but I was wrong Have a look here
http://www.croftonline.co.uk/products.asp?partno=38E

The 38" one is the one we have, ours has one door but I must admit I often wish it had two, although not sure I would pay that much extra.

Anyway thought I would share that as it has served us well and someone else might find it useful.

Well I've spent loads of money, time and love and getting toys etc for my gang. The little swines have hidden them, (still finding in weird places.) Well the other day went to the shed to get the tarp out to cover stuff in the lounge to do some painting, typical man left it in the kitchen whilst sorting stuff out, got the gang out, put them in the kitchen. Am I allowed the tarp back..........No, they love it make tunnels, snake through it, hide, ambush, sleep, eat, jump all over it and finally hide their other toys in it.
I've now got to go out and buy another one so i can use it for what i was going to in the first place.
Swines but you got to love them.

Hi again all!

I was wondering what everyones opinions are about collars on ferrets?

I did have one for Finley so I could locate him if he was around the house or slipped his harness (it has a bell on it) but I stopped using it because I was a bit worried he could get it caught on something, however it does have a snap clasp that opens if lightly tugged so I'm sure he'd be safe wearing it.

Advice advice advice!!! :applause:
