I've been offered 2 ferrets from my college and I am really tempted, then Jill has the exact same temperament as my current Jill as she loves to play with her teeth but knows when to stop and have a cuddle. My only worry is that the hob has quite a big wound from having an abscess removed. It has been there a good few months and as they're washing it so regularly to avoid infection it's healing quite slowly.
Obviously I don't want to take on more than I can handle, has anyone had experience with quite severe wounds? What is the best way to get it to heal?
I'm going to be getting a shed so I thought as there will be no mesh for him to get caught on I could use a sock or something to stop getting dirt on it but will allow some air to get to it.
Cheers for any advice

I've had my two ferrets for 2 months now, and they have always been extra friendly and never tried to bite me (except my feet when I first got them). However, recently-last week or two Gertrude has started to nip now and again. Its really random, sometimes my hand will be infront of her face and she wont do anything, other times she'll either start to lick then nip or just nip straight away. I haven't been using different soap or perfume, and Geraldine (her sister) hasn't tried nipping, just licks me now and again. I'm really not sure what the reason could be! Its literally just a quick nip, she doesn't latch on and has never broke my skin. I tell her 'no!' and put her on the floor (if she's been on my lap and nipped me). I'm not worried about it hurting or anything as its not bad biting but I'm just worried about if she's okay and the reason for her doing it all of a sudden!
Sorry for the essay but I would really appreciate if anyone could help and give ideas what the reason could be!
Thanks everyone!

My 2 gills had their jab about a month ago to bring them out of season and after talking to the vet I decided to get a neutered male to bring them out of season the natural way next year so a week after their jabs I saw a big hob on the web and decided to go pick him up. The guy told me he was neutered but I ain't too sure one of my jills is looking pretty fat around her belly.
So if she is preggers will she need separating from the other 2 and could you please give me some more info on what to do if she is so I am well prepared in advance
Thanks

So my mum has out her foot down randomly (well one of the ferrets did pee on and break the tv amp) and said no more ferrets inside, not even my room but has now agreed I can have as much garden as I need to convert a shed for them so I can go out and play instead.
I'm just wondering what modifications people made?
I'll probably be installing a cat flap to a meshed aviary outside (how do people find their fuzzies cope with cat flaps?) and is an outdoor aviary essential?
Another mod I think I'm going to need is a double door entrance to stop them running out.
How do people secure shelves and stuff to make use of height?
If anyone has a conversion guide or something that would be a good help
Any ideas welcome. I'll definitely be putting lino on the floor too for ease of cleaning

Argh..

After taking my OH to see some ferrets at a ferret rescue, plus she had seen the ferrets we had at my parents when we first got together (about 6 years ago) she finally agreed to get some fuzzies.

The ferrets we had (x3 of them) were totally domesticated, only one of them "nipped" you in the "fleshy" areas, but she never drew blood.. the other two were totally docile and would usually lick your fingers when you picked them up. They were handled and played with every night by all members of the family, so they were really good with people.

Now since she has agreed, ive bought a chicken coop (the 8 foot one) and some other supplies to put a floor on it etc (but due to illness and the bad weather, haven't had time to put it all together) and since then all the bad publicity has hit the news papers of Ferrets attacking babies and biting off their fingers.. >< So now thats pretty much put her off us getting them.. Ive tried to explain that ferrets are like most animals (with behaviour trends).. The more you handle/play with them, the less likely they are to bite you.. And ferrets from the rescue center will already be Nip Trained.. For the first few months I will be the only person to handle them becasue i dont really mind if they bite me or not (the 3 we had were from Kits.. so i know how they can bite.. and latch.. and pull >< etc..). Then once im comfortable with them ill introduce my 2 year old to them (obviously with him sitting with me and letting the ferrets come to us).

But I think the bad press has totally put her off getting them, doesnt help that her grandparents gave her news clippings of the ferret attack to show me.. :/

I guess im just raging that a tiny bit of bad press from people with no knowlege of these brilliant animals can put a bad light on the whole ferret population.. Regardless of me telling her that there are more stories in the papers about family dogs killing people every day than there are about ferrets attacking people in an entire year.. RARGH...

Hi All,

This is just a quick note to let you know of what I consider to be a really good aviary for your ferts!

We bought one to keep our new boy in so he is in the same room with our girls and Chilli but apart, because he will not leave them, particularly Chilli, alone.

It fitted together really well with the panels clearly labelled, pre-drilled holes and all of the screws you need. We didn't even need instructions!

We got the 6ft x 3ft but there are other sizes available!
